I am a Substitute Lecturer of Political Science at Queens College, City University of New York. My research concerns the institutional context of American elections. That includes the party system, electoral system, and how these are developing across levels of government. Most of my teaching has been in American political institutions and research skills/methods.

My first book, More Parties or No Parties: The Politics of Electoral Reform in America (2022), sketched a set of tools for thinking about electoral-system change. Then it applied them to past use (1915-62) of proportional representation in U.S. cities. Key parts of the history are here. The theory links different reform outcomes to different kinds of 'coalition shift.'

I have other projects or papers on populism, party change, and descriptive representation. My work revolves around finding ways to make American democracy work better.
